First off, I want you to know that my home office didn’t get to the way it is now over night. It took several years to get it to this stage. I’ve done tons of home office moves over the years, switching my office from room to room.

At one point, I moved my home office to an open area of our home because I wanted good sight lines through our home.

Afterwards I realized I wanted to move my office back into an actual room so I could have a little space that’s all my own.

I moved it back into this little room in our home, and I think I’m finally done moving it. I love this sweet space that I call my own…usually. 😉

My home office is currently tucked away from the rest of the house and has a door that I can shut when I need quiet.

The most recent change I made to this space is purchasing a new desk and filing cabinet. I used to have an old IKEA desk in my office that I had painted white. It worked for awhile but it was time for an upgrade…and I knew that after finding this desk and cabinet on Facebook Marketplace for super cheap. It was a sign!

Now that I’ve got you all caught up, let’s chat about some fun home office ideas for women!

HOME OFFICE IDEAS FOR WOMEN

Make an accent wall

My DIY board and batten wall in my home office really elevates the space. If you’re like me and have a small home office space, there’s only so much you can do in terms of filling the space with furniture, so why not make use of the walls?!

My hubby made my board and batten wall years ago, and originally I painted it a soft gray. It wasn’t really standing out in the space so I decided to paint it dark gray.

Can I tell ya how much I LOVE the wall painted dark gray?! The exact paint color is called Intellectual by Behr Paint. It gives the room such a fun look that I love.

If you don’t want to do something this labor intensive, consider simply painting one wall a darker color to be an accent wall. Or, install some peel and stick wallpaper on a wall.

Either way, you’ll have a wall that will be a showstopper!

BUY STYLISH & FUNCTIONAL OFFICE FURNITURE

For years I had an old IKEA desk that I painted white in my home office. It had two drawers for files and it worked well for awhile.

If you have a desk that you don’t love and it’s not in your budget to buy new home office furniture, I suggest painting your furniture! As you may know, I’m a huge advocate of painting wood furniture…like that time I chalk painted my living room side tables or when I painted my buffet that now resides in my dining room or when I painted my daughter’s vintage dresser…the list goes on!

I actually found my new home office furniture on Facebook Marketplace, and it was a serious steal.

This is why I say to always be checking Facebook Marketplace. You can find so many good deals. Even if you find something you’re not currently shopping for… I say grab it!

Items go really quickly on Marketplace so if you don’t grab it, someone else will. That being said, only buy things that will really work well in your home. Don’t buy something just because it’s a good deal!

I saw this gorgeous white desk and file cabinet for sale and I immediately reached out. I actually almost missed out on it because she was about to sell the file cabinet to someone else, but when I said I wanted both the desk and cabinet, she sold them both to me. Woo hoo!

I love that the file cabinet is pretty and yet is also super functional!

Update: My desk is originally from Ballard Designs but it’s no longer sold. I received so many questions about it that I made a post of home office desks similar to mine!

I keep all our papers in the top drawer so that I can stay organized.

My desk also has a drawer for even more files, which is absolutely amazing! I love all the storage that this set has.

When you’re shopping for furniture, make sure to consider your storage needs. Don’t buy a writing desk that has zero drawers if you need drawers!

You’ll also want to invest in a comfy and stylish office chair. I love my dark gray office chair! It not only matches my board and batten wall, it’s really comfy and I love leaning back in it and putting my feet on the desk.

I just put my laptop on my lap and work with my feet up…don’t you do that, too?! 😉

I like keeping a pillow and blanket in my office as much as possible, though they usually somehow make their way to our living room and pretty much around the house in general.

I LOVE this pom pom blanket and textured throw pillow!!

Keep printer, electronics & unsightly items stored away

To keep a stylish space yet still functional, put your unsightly items away but in a place where they’re still easily accessible.

The bottom drawer of my file cabinet holds my printer. I could easily put the printer on top of my desk or on the file cabinet, but I really dislike looking at a printer everyday.

We don’t use our printer that often, so I really don’t need to keep it out all the time. I simply store it in the file cabinet where it’s easily accessible if I do need it.

If you have an office closet or large office cabinet, those would be great places to store all your unsightly items too.

Choose Stylish Decor

Mirrors, flowers, and candles are three items that are pretty much my go to decorative items in any space, so it’s no surprise that I have them in my office.

I am currently obsessed with this large ceramic candle! I always have it burning when I’m doing work in my office.

I just added these three books to my desk collection, and I love browsing through them when I’m feeling uncreative. I’ve been a long time fan of Liz Marie Galvan so having her book Cozy White Cottage is a dream. I also love looking through Joanna Gaines’ book Homebody. And yes, that third book is a cookbook. I’m a huge fan of Jillian Harris so Fraiche Food Full Hearts was a no brainer!!

I’m a lover of both faux and real flowers and plants, but faux are zero maintenance so I definitely opt to have lots of faux stems in my home. The ones in the back are lambs ears and the bouquet on my desk is a mixture of faux flowers including faux hydrangeas.

Adding picture frames and photos is also a great choice for home office ideas for women. I have four silver frames that are a bit more money than I’d usually spend on an 8 x 10 frame, but these are so high quality, they were definitely worth it.

You know you bought a good frame when you can easily remove the back of the frame to adjust the photo. You don’t have to get a tool to help you! HAHA!

choose a color scheme

When you design a home office, choose a color scheme that you love. I chose a dark gray/white/peach pallet in my home office, and I absolutely love it.

I typically choose white or neutral curtains in my home, but I wanted my home office to feel more feminine, so I stepped out of my comfort zone and went with some that have more color in them. My curtains in my home office are from Walmart, though I can’t find them on the website.

I tied in that peach color around my home office with the pops in pink in the faux bouquet, my candle, my gold mirror and hints from my area rug.
