First thing’s first though. I have to show you what our small powder room used to look like. Check out the ‘before’ and ‘after’ shot below. It’s a pretty drastic transformation. The color alone makes a HUGE difference, which brings me to the first idea on our list of small powder room ideas.

HERE ARE SMALL POWDER ROOM IDEAS USING WHITE & GREY:

1. Make it Light and Bright.

I chose to paint our bathroom in white and grey tones. This is quite different from where we started. There’s nothing wrong with using darker tones, but using light colors makes our room look bigger. Not only did I paint the walls lighter and brighter, I also painted the existing vanity. This powder room makeover REVEAL is insane! The knobs got a makeover, too. They were once brass, so I simply spray painted them silver. We did purchase a new faucet because ours was spraying funny, but this was a very inexpensive purchase.

It’d be a little weird if they weren’t down. 😉 I realize the irony of what I just said in relation to the next picture. This powder room makeover REVEAL is insane! The blinds are up in this picture purely for picture-taking purposes. That said, we did actually switch out the blinds. We purchased these cordless blinds and LOVE them. They pull up and down with your hand which is perfect because no string hangs down for my two-year-old daughter to mess with. Here’s what our window used to look like:

I swear we didn’t always have an ill-cut piece of fabric hiding the upper-half of our window. We actually had a shade there but it broke one day and we needed a quick fix (obviously). We had an extra piece of grey fabric in my stock pile so Jason quickly cut it and stuck it up there. One thing led to another and it was there for a solid year. And this is our main floor powder room, mind you. So yes, our friends and family who came to visit saw it. It was pretty embarrassing. Needless to say, that piece of fabric the first thing to go when I started this powder room makeover.

2. Less is More

As you can see below, we took took down the medicine cabinet. It was just to big and bulky for the small space. I actually repurposed the mirror that was on the existing medicine cabinet. I just unscrewed it, filled in the knob hole, and painted it. Easy peasy and it only cost me a little in paint. This powder room makeover REVEAL is insane! Such a difference, right? Did you notice that I also removed the cabinet above the toilet? I am still debating if I should paint it white and hang it back up. Without the flowers, the space above the toilet looks a little empty. We’ll see what happens, but for now I like the simplicity. This powder room makeover REVEAL is insane! Those flowers really do make an impact. They are real flowers, though I’m not opposed to using faux flowers at all. I will swap out these real ones for some faux ones when they wilt.

And, I mean I had to throw a few pumpkins in the mix because it’s fall. Which brings me to the following idea on my list of small powder room ideas.

3. Use minimal decor that makes a statement

Since only a few pieces of decor will fit in a small space, make them statement pieces. The candle holder from Hobby Lobby is tall but skinny, so it makes the perfect statement piece without taking up too much space. Plop a pumpkin on top, and we’ll call it fall. It is actually fall, though. 😉

I also added a silver bowl passed down to me from my mom which holds some inexpensive white towels.

The small white pumpkin next to the flowers ties in the other pumpkin across the room. It’s the perfect size for the space next to the jug vase.

As you can see below, I took down the pictures on the opposite side of the wall. I felt that the wall looked better bare. Also, take a look at our toilet seat. I know it’s not a sexy subject, but we bought this padded toilet seat awhile back and it’s like heaven. When we first purchased our home almost five years ago, we pretty much immediately redid our master bath. When we did, I replaced the toilet seat with a padded one. Jason thought I was crazy. I remember him making a remark to me – some joke about us being elderly. Fast forward a year later, and he was all….”so do you want to replace our powder room toilet seat with a padded one?” UH HUH! Listen, they’re the best thing since sliced bread. And I’ll leave it at that.

Quick note on the paint here. The photo below shows our two-tone walls pretty well. We used Behr paint in sterling for the back wall, which gave it the perfect contrast. The white paint on the wall? That’s actually Wal-Mart flat ceiling paint. I just used it because it was left-over and I wanted to keep this makeover budget-friendly. You can see what a difference the white tone is, in contrast to the Behr ultra white glossy paint that’s on the window trim.
